Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate muscular, traumatic & dental pain, headache, post-op & post-partum pain, RA (including Still's disease) & OA. Dysmenorrhea; menorrhagia. Pyrexia in childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Analgesic or antidysmenorrheal Initially 500 mg tds followed by 250 mg every 6 hr. Duration: Not to exceed >7 days at a time.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Inflammatory bowel disease, peptic &/or intestinal ulceration, asthma. Renal & hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if diarrhea or skin rash develops. Patients w/ prior history of serious adverse event & other risk factors associated w/ PUD (eg, alcoholism, smoking & corticosteroid therapy). Risk of GI ulcerations, bleeding & perforation w/ NSAID. Renal disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn up to 14 yr. Elderly or debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances eg, diarrhoea, peptic ulceration & GI bleeding; headache, drowsiness & dizziness; hypersensitivity reaction eg, skin rashes & urticaria.
Drug Interactions
Slight potentiation of oral anticoagulants.
